Yoga Therapy or 1:1 Yoga Session
Sarah-Jane Trained in Advanced teaching skills and Yoga therapy with long established organisation ‘Yoga Therapy Ireland’. In comparison to a yoga teacher, a yoga therapist would have a deeper understanding of yoga specific anatomy, physiology, and medical conditions. They are taught how to adapt postures to suit limitations due to a clients physical condition. Yoga therapy is becoming more mainstream due to scientific studies and ‘proof’ that it works. Varied studies have shown yoga’s success rate as very high as it promotes overall natural healing of the body. More medical professions are accepting it as a comparable form of treatment. It is being integrated into other forms of treatment such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, oncology, and GPs are referring patients to yoga.
How does a yoga therapy session work?
It is not a yoga class. Yoga Therapy is a 1:1 session where the therapist will focus on the clients specific needs rather than just yoga poses. It is similar to physiotherapy however yoga therapy includes the use of breath, mindfulness and relaxation. It starts with an initial consultation lasting 1 - 1.5 hrs where a case history is put together and movement analysis takes place. A specific course of gentle yoga asanas and breath work is designed to to suit the individual. The therapist focuses on their condition and how yoga techniques can help make them feel better, overcome a challenge, improve their function or live more comfortably. A short home practice is designed in the form of a video recording for the client to do regularly at home. This is the key to improvement.
Who attends a yoga therapy session?
A therapy consultation is normally one one one but can be done in a small group with individuals who have similar needs or conditions ie arthritis, MS, Cancer care or recovery. It is suitable for a person who is unable to attend a regular yoga class due to a limitation, or an issue.
Common medical conditions such as arthritis, back pain, MS, stress, anxiety, injury, neurological conditions, spinal injury, surgery recovery, auto-immune conditions, common neck / shoulder pain.
